Dining RoomNow you are in our dining room looking towards the kitchen. On the floor you can see some of the chemicals that we are using to fix up the house. There is spackle and joint compounds and lots of cleaning supplies. After Beth and I spent two weekends cleaning house, we finally gave up and hired two Brazilian women to clean the house for us. They charged us $15/hour and spent a total of 15 hours each on the first floor alone. No, they weren't slow workers---in fact, I've never seen anybody clean like that before. They got on their hands and knees and scrubbed the floors and the walls and all of the woodwork. No, the problem is that the place basically was not cleaned for 10 years, there was a lot of dust, and there is evidence that the oil heater was spewing ash and soot into the house as well. ... Still, my mother thinks that we got ripped off. The door on the left leads down to the basement. The door on the right leads into the kitchen.
