We have had several computers on which Apple Remote Desktop will not engage, or stops working after it was previously working.

The following steps seem to get things working again:

  1. Open System Preferences.
    1. Select Sharing
    2. Select Remote Management
    3. Make sure the user you are connecting through is listed. (Note: even if "All users" is checked, I've found you still need to explicitly list the user that you wish to connect as.)
    4. Click on Options and make sure everything is checked except Generate reports. (If you check "Generate Remotes," then your Mac will go crazy every night as it scans the entire file system.)
  2. You can do this remotely by following the instructions on HT2370.
