My strategy for setting up a new Mac:
- Wipe the disk and install OS.
- Download and install Apple Developer tools.
- Consider purchasing and using these Apple Apps:
- iLife
- iWork
- When you have installed them, be sure to run Apple Update.
- Download and install the following commercial apps (many of them are free; others are licensed):
- Norton Anti-Virus (recommended by DoD)
- Microsoft Office
- Microsoft Silverlight
- SuperDuper!, an easy-to-use backup system for the Mac which makes bootable drives.
- OmniGraffle
- PDF Pen
- Download and install the following open source software:
- MacPorts
- A GUI EMACS Aquamacs, Emacs 21 for MacOS , or Emacs.app
- MacTeX
- Go to the terminal and type the following:
- sudo port selfupdate
- sudo port install unison
