Versant, IP ship database tools

NeXTSTEP database developers have a wider choice of tools now that two long-awaited database products have shipped. Versant Object Technology released the NeXT version of its object database management system (ODBMS), while IP Design shipped a feature-rich enhancement to Parabase.

With its shipment, Versant beat Object Design (ODI) to market with the first commercially available ODBMS for NeXTSTEP. "Now developers can use NeXT-STEP and Versant to create and deploy complex object-based applications which would be impossible with conventional technology," said NeXT CEO Steve Jobs.

Versant claimed that the product delivers transparent multiuser access to objects distributed anywhere on a local network.

The product is available at an introductory price of $1995 until March 31.

IP Design said that #Parabase 1.1 adds 47 new features to its relational client-server database-development system, including extensive new scripting options and interface improvements. Parabase is used with Sybase or Oracle database servers for form generation, database creation and modification, report writing, ad hoc querying, and database administration.

The upgrade is free to registered owners of Parabase 1.0. A single-user license costs $695.
