While cryptography experts have been warning us for years about the inherent
dangers of using weak crypto, a small company in Utah called AccessData has
been quietly selling military-grade code-breaking software to law
enforcement, private investigators, and corporations with "special"
problems. Called The Password Recovery Tool Kit, this software can unlock

which lets you use spare cycles a network of PCs to crack open Microsoft
Word and Excel files. Microsoft uses 40-bit RC2 for its encryption
algorithm, letting a network of 25 PCs running crack a document open in just

Although it is tempting to say that AccessData's Toolkit is proof that
software developers need to use stronger cryptography to protect personal
information, I'm sure that many people who have lost their Quicken or MS
Money passwords and then downloaded the $59 "personal recovery module" are
grateful for the weak security. Let's face it: most computer users cannot
responsibly handle the unbreakable locks that strong cryptography provides.
